The binary alloy composed of silicon and calcium belongs to the category of ferroalloy. Its main components are silicon and calcium, and it also contains different amounts of iron, aluminum, carbon, sulfur, phosphorus and other impurities. Iron and steel industry is used as calcium additive, deoxidizer, desulfurizer and denaturant of non-metallic inclusion. The cast iron industry is used as inoculant and denaturant.
Due to the strong affinity between calcium and oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon in molten steel, calcium silicon alloy is mainly used for deoxidation, degassing and sulfur fixation of molten steel. There is a strong exothermic effect when silicon calcium is added into the molten steel. Calcium in the molten steel turns into calcium vapor, which has a stirring effect on the molten steel and is favorable for the floatation of non-metallic inclusions. After deoxidization, the non-metallic inclusions with large particles and easy to float are produced, and the shape and properties of the inclusions are also changed. Therefore, silicon calcium alloy is used to produce clean steel, high-quality steel with low oxygen and sulfur content, and special performance steel with extremely low oxygen and sulfur content. The addition of silicon calcium alloy can eliminate the nodulation of the steel with aluminum as the final deoxidizer at the ladle nozzle and the clogging of the tundish nozzle of continuous casting and ironmaking. In the process of steel refining outside the furnace, the content of oxygen and sulfur in the steel is reduced to a very low level by deoxidizing and desulfurizing with calcium silicate powder or core wire; the form of sulfide in the steel can also be controlled and the utilization rate of calcium can be increased.
